Amber Portwood Hospitalized After Suicide Attempt

Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant star Amber Portwood was rushed to an Indiana hospital Tuesday afternoon after reportedly being found unconcious in her home with a rope around her neck, in what appears to have been a suicide attempt.

According to Star magazine via Radar Online, the 21-year-old teen mother (daughter is 2-year-old Leah) was found by police shortly before noon and was taken to St. John's hospital in Anderson, Ind., where she admitted to staffers that she had taken a "cocktail of pills."

Police confirmed Portwood's suicide attempt in a statement, which read: "Late this morning (11:34 a.m.), Anderson Police responded to a call at a residence in the 1300 block of Pleasant Meadow Drive. According to the caller, 21-year-old Amber L. Portwood was depressed and threatening to end her life. The victim, who did not appear to be injured, was transported to a local medical facility for further evaluation."

Police confirmed that the call was not made by Portwood, but rather by "a relative" at a different location who asked authorities to check on the MTV reality star. A source tells Radar it was Gary Shirley, Portwood's on-off boyfriend and baby-daddy, who first sensed that something was amiss after Portwood sounded despondent during a phone call earlier in the day. He alerted his mother of the situation, and she is thought to have been the relative who contacted police.

While the police report says that Portwood "did not appear to be injured," a Radar source paints a very different picture. "Two policemen arrived, found her face-up on the couch and immediately called for an ambulance," relays the source. "When two EMT workers arrived, they removed the rope that Amber had loosely knotted around her neck. They tried speaking with her, but she was in and out of consciousness and couldn't respond; she was just moaning. They gave her an oxygen mask, put her on a gurney, and rushed her to the hospital."

It is not clear what prompted the suicide attempt, but Portwood has had a rough go of it lately. Nude photos of Portwood were leaked on the Internet in February (reportedly by a friend), and just last week Amber pled guilty to two counts of domestic battery, after she was caught by MTV's cameras hitting Shirley on three different occasions. Portwood struck a plea deal in the case in order to escape jail time, and was ordered to serve two years probation, get her high school diploma, start a college fund for Leah, and complete 30 days of in-patient treatment.

Portwood is still being evaluated at St. John's Hospital, but has regained consciousness and is in stable condition.
